Sea Grape Gallery presents Kate Staber, Oriental brush painter. Kate, originally from Connecticut, began the study of
Oriental brush painting over 35 years ago under some of the great masters in China using the traditional techniques dating
back 10 centuries. Zen Buddhist monks practiced the art to develop their powers of concentration. As Kate explains “every
stroke has to be very controlled and is worked without under-drawing or touchups requiring a confident approach to
the subject, whether a simple flower or a complex landscape.” Kate’s paintings give the viewer a feeling of tranquility and
emotional involvement which can be equated to the spiritual elevation of Zen. Kate has exhibited and won awards in juried
shows all of over the United States and in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Xiamen, China. In 1988 Kate was chosen by
then First Lady Nancy Reagan to paint two Easter eggs which are on display in a permanent collection in the Smithsonian
Museum in Washington, D.C. Many pieces of Kate’s artwork are prominently on display at Sea Grape Gallery. In addition,
more of her art and the art works of all Sea Grape artists can be viewed at For more details: or 941.575.1718. Punta Gorda

The Arts & Humanities Council of Charlotte County has chosen Lionel Lewis “Artist of the Month” for July 2014. Lewis will
be honored with a proclamation from the Board of County Commissioners on July 22, 2014. His work can be viewed at the
Art & Humanities Council’s office in the Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce building, Port Charlotte. The public is invited
to visit. Lionel Lewis was a self-taught artist until he enrolled at the American Art Academy where he first learned the
fundamentals of drawing and design. Early influences were the paintings of Paul Klee and Walter Kadinsky. Lewis moved
on to NYC Community College where he earned an Associate Degree in Art and Design. Family matters forced Lewis on a
15 year sabbatical from painting but he kept his dream alive by working in the field of picture framing, furniture restoration
and woodworking. He moved to southwest Florida in 1998. Discovering the Visual Arts Center in 2003 sparked his return
to painting. A few years later, he met instructor Alberto Cruz who became his mentor. It is Cruz’ philosophy of thinking “outside
the box” that steered Lewis on his “current journey of what he describes as Modern Abstractionism.” He looks forward
to increase the use of color, unfamiliar shapes and movement of form in his work. Lewis has exhibited at the FGCU Herald
Court Campus and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Port Charlotte. For more details: 941.764.8100 or
